Head uptown for a special herb-centric evening at the Horticultural Society of NY at beautiful Riverbank State Park. Tour the gardens and greenhouse, learn about herbs, plant your own, and then sup on a sumptuous herb-centric meal.
Tuesday, May 14 at the Greenhouse of the Horticultural Society at Riverbank State Park (only a 10-minute walk from 145th Street station on the number 1 train; UPDATED directions below)
$35 per person
We’ll first tour the Horticultural Society’s Greenhouse and outdoor gardens while sampling hors d’oeuvres brightened with fresh herbs from the gardens. We will then dig in (literally!) and plant our own herbs (to take home). Finally, we’ll sit down to a locally sourced plant-based supper featuring a variety of seasonal asparagus and fresh herbs and special mocktails featuring spirits from Seedlip.
Annette Nielsen, who runs the culinary programs at the Horticultural Society, will lead this special program, with Kristin Lucey, the Greenhouse manager, guiding us in the herb plantings for the windowsill.
Tentative menu (subject to changes based on availability):
- Light seasonal hors d’oeuvres in the Greenhouse
- Herbed mocktail featuring Seedlip nonalcoholic spirits
- Supper in the Greenhouse featuring Shaved Asparagus Salad with Arugula, Parmesan, and Herb vinaigrette and a Mushroom, Asparagus, and Ramp Risotto
- Lemon-Thyme Sorbet and cookies for dessert
Limited to 16 attendees, members ONLY.
Two volunteers needed : one for write-up and one for photography and social media.

UPDATED Directions to the Greenhouse at Riverbank Park: Due to the temporary closing of a sidewalk, to reach the Greenhouse you should enter the park at the 145th Street entrance. The 1 train to 145th is the closest subway station; the A, B, C, and D to 145th is also nearby.
Once you enter the park and are in a circle that winds in front of a large entrance, walk straight through the building and out the other side; you will be in the interior of the park. To your left (south) you will see the track/field. Walk in the direction of the track and follow sidewalk up slight incline. As you walk on the sidewalk with the track on your right, the entrance to the Greenhouse (white building) will be on your left. (You’ll see the community garden beyond the greenhouse.)
